New Delhi: As India observed World Health Day on 7th April, it is a moment to reflect on the country’s progress in healthcare and to address the persistent challenges that continue to impact the well-being of its citizens.
One of the most pressing issues facing India is healthcare access and affordability. While significant progress has been made in expanding healthcare infrastructure and services, millions of Indians still lack access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved areas. High out-of-pocket expenses often deter individuals from seeking essential medical care, pushing them further into poverty.
Furthermore, health disparities persist along socioeconomic and regional lines, exacerbating the marginalization of vulnerable populations. Dalits, Adivasis, and other marginalized communities face barriers to healthcare access due to discrimination, lack of awareness, and inadequate infrastructure. Addressing these disparities requires targeted interventions that prioritize the needs of marginalized communities and ensure their inclusion in healthcare decision-making processes.
Additionally, India must confront the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). While infectious diseases like COVID-19 require immediate attention, the rising prevalence of NCDs such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer poses a long-term health challenge. Prevention and early intervention strategies are crucial for tackling the NCD burden and reducing the strain on healthcare resources.
Subodh Gupta, CEO, Lords Mark Microbiotech, “Owing to the momentous occasion of World Health Day, Lords Mark Microbiotech stands firm in its belief that health is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. Our commitment echoes the principle: My health is my right. Every individual deserves access to safe, high-quality medical care without discrimination. We advocate for policy changes, community empowerment, and the prioritization of health across all sectors. We anticipate the government will invest substantially to ensure equitable healthcare services for all, prioritizing transparency, accountability, and inclusion while fostering a policy shift that encourages a preventive and proactive approach to healthcare management of chronic diseases rather than a reactive approach. This will help reduce the burden of chronic illness and help the population identify the risks much earlier and take proactive steps to prevent disease. As pioneers in saliva-based preventive genome tests, we strive to democratize healthcare through accessible, at-home kits, unveiling genetic markers for various health conditions. Our mission is to empower individuals, healthcare providers, and researchers worldwide, ensuring that every person, regardless of background, can exercise their right to a healthier future.”
As per Sajeev Nair, Founder & Chairman, Vieroots Wellness Solutions, “In today’s rapidly evolving landscape of healthcare, individuals are increasingly empowered to take control of their own health thanks to advancements in genetics, artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) based wearables. With the rise of genetic testing services, individuals can gain valuable insights into their genetic predispositions, allowing them to make informed decisions about their lifestyle, diet, and healthcare choices. Additionally, AI-driven technologies enable personalized health recommendations and predictive analytics, helping individuals proactively manage their health and prevent potential health issues.”
“The emergence of IoT-based wearables further revolutionizes the way people monitor their health in real-time. From smartwatches and fitness trackers to connected health devices, these wearables provide continuous data on vital signs, activity levels, and sleep patterns, empowering individuals to track their progress and make adjustments to optimize their health.”
Personalized preventive health has become increasingly important in today’s healthcare landscape. By leveraging genetic information, AI algorithms, and wearable technology, individuals can adopt personalized preventive measures tailored to their unique needs and risk factors. This proactive approach to health not only enhances overall well-being but also reduces the risk of chronic diseases and improves long-term health outcomes. As individuals become more engaged in their health journey, the future of healthcare is poised to shift towards a preventive, personalized, and proactive model that prioritizes individual empowerment and well-being.

Sony Thomas, Executive Director, CBM India Trust says: “On World Health Day, this year’s theme “My health, my right” echoes profoundly, emphasizing the intrinsic importance of equitable access to quality healthcare for all. It is universally acknowledged that health is a fundamental human right, essential for a life of dignity and well-being. However, despite tremendous advancements, significant disparities persist, particularly for members of marginalized communities, including persons with disabilities.”
“This World Health Day serves as a poignant call to action to reaffirm our commitment to redefining health and healthcare as inalienable rights, not a privilege limited to a fortunate few. Through collaborative partnerships, innovative solutions, and decisive actions, we can work towards bridging the gap and eliminating disparities in healthcare access. By fostering a society where no one is left behind, we can truly realize the vision of universal health for all, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and live their healthiest lives,” he concluded.
As India navigates the complexities of its healthcare landscape, it must also embrace innovation and technology as catalysts for change. Telemedicine, digital health records, and artificial intelligence have the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery and improve access, particularly in remote areas. However, equitable access to technology must be ensured to prevent further marginalization of disadvantaged communities.
On this World Health Day, let us recommit ourselves to the pursuit of health equity in India. By prioritizing universal healthcare access, addressing disparities, promoting mental health awareness, and embracing innovation, we can build a healthier, more resilient nation for all. As we commemorate World Health Day 2024, let us remember that health is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of India’s progress and prosperity.
