Sikkim launches A-HELP program to enhance livestock sector support

The new initiative aims to bridge the gap between farmers and the Department, boosting productivity and rural development

New Delhi: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in Sikkim has launched a new initiative, A-HELP (Accredited Agent for Health and Extension of Livestock Production) for strengthening the link between livestock farmers and the department.
During the launch, Puran Kr. Gurung, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services highlighted the program’s potential to significantly enhance livestock health, improve extension services, and promote women’s empowerment. He emphasized that A-HELP is a step in establishing a link between livestock farmers and the department.
In a video message, Alka Upadhayaya, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), encouraged A-HELP workers to play a pivotal role in advancing the livestock sector. She stressed the importance of these workers in bridging existing gaps in extension activities by providing direct support to farmers at their doorstep.
Dr. Sharman Rai, Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in Sikkim, welcomed the participants and outlined the program’s on-ground impact. He noted that A-HELP agents will be instrumental in disease control, animal tagging, and livestock insurance.
The A-HELP initiative leverages the Self-Help Group (SHG) platform of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NRLM) to enhance animal husbandry activities. Already implemented in 12 states and union territories, including Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Assam, the program aims to bring these benefits to more regions.
At the event, specialized A-HELP Kits were distributed to “Pashu Sakhis,” who will be trained and accredited as A-HELP agents. Over 500 participants, including progressive farmers and Pashu Sakhis, attended the launch, signaling strong community support for the initiative.
The program was inaugurated by Puran Kr. Gurung, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok. Kala Rai, Advisor to the Rural Development Department, was also present as a special guest.
