New Delhi: In a recent survey conducted by Rockwell Automation, workforce challenges have been identified as the primary concern for life sciences manufacturers, surpassing traditional worries about economic growth.
The findings, part of the 9th annual “State of Smart Manufacturing Report: Life Sciences Edition,” reflect responses from 111 leaders in the industry across 15 key manufacturing countries.
The report emphasizes the evolving landscape of the life sciences sector, focusing on the necessity of leveraging emerging technologies to address risks, manage supply chains, and enhance workforce capabilities. With 2024 bringing a renewed focus on workforce issues, an impressive 96% of manufacturers are either implementing or considering smart manufacturing technologies, which now account for 31% of their operating budgets. Despite these investments, the challenge of balancing quality with profitable growth remains paramount.
According to the report, the rising costs of labor and the difficulty in sourcing skilled workers pose significant hurdles. Additionally, manufacturers are increasingly committed to environmentally sustainable practices, integrating these initiatives into their product lifecycles as part of their broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies.
Dilip Sawhney, managing director of Rockwell Automation India, commented, “The ability to attract, retain and develop a skilled workforce is paramount for the success of life sciences manufacturers. As workforce challenges outpace concerns about economic growth, it becomes increasingly clear that investing in smart manufacturing technologies and workforce development are critical.”
He added, “At Rockwell, we are committed to supporting the life sciences sector through advanced automation solutions that not only increase operational efficiency but also empower employees to drive innovation and sustain growth. Addressing these workforce challenges will be essential to navigating the complexities of today’s manufacturing environment and achieving long-term success.”
The report indicates that manufacturers are prioritizing strategies to retain and upskill their workforce. Technologies such as automation and smart manufacturing solutions are essential not only for overcoming current obstacles but also for fostering innovation in a complex manufacturing landscape.
