New Delhi: The 2nd National Pediatric Stroke Conclave 2024 was held in Bengaluru on the 29th and 30th of June. Dr. Nirmal Surya, President of the Indian Stroke Association (ISA), officially opened the two-day conclave, which aimed to be an extraordinary academic gathering of national and international experts in pediatric stroke prevention, care, and treatment.
Bengaluru, known for its healthcare innovation, adds another feather to its cap with this mega conclave. Pediatric stroke is the sixth leading cause of death among children globally, and nearly fifty to sixty per cent of pediatric strokes are treatable and preventable. With an estimated fifty-two babies born every minute in India, the socio-economic repercussions of pediatric stroke are substantial. Studies from India show that pediatric strokes constitute less than one per cent of pediatric hospital admissions and five to ten per cent of all young strokes (defined as strokes in individuals below forty years). These numbers are likely higher due to many unreported and undetected cases. Unlike adult strokes, which often result from high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol, pediatric strokes have complex and multifactorial causes.
This conclave provided a platform for healthcare professionals to exchange knowledge, engage in meaningful discussions, and stay informed about the latest research and developments in pediatric stroke prevention, care, and treatment. The event’s primary objective was to enhance the quality of pediatric care nationwide and address critical issues in the field. Key sessions over the two days covered topics such as Neuroimaging of Pediatric Stroke, Pediatric Vasculitis and Vasculopathies, Cardioembolic Stroke, Hyperacute Management of Pediatric Stroke, and Neurointerventions in Pediatric Stroke.
The conclave featured an impressive list of speakers, including Dr. Nirmal Surya (President, ISA), Dr. Vikram Huded (Organising Chairman), Dr. Arvind Sharma (Secretary, ISA), Dr. Minal Kekatpure (Organising Secretary), Dr. Vinayan K.P., Dr. Sheffali Gulati, and Dr. Pratibha Singhi (President, International Child Neurology Association). International speakers include Dr. Heather Fullerton (President, International Pediatric Stroke Organisation) and Dr. Maja Steinlin (Vice President, International Pediatric Stroke Organisation).
