Alkem Foundation's Mumbai Walkathon
New Delhi: In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Day, Alkem Foundation, the CSR arm of Alkem Laboratories Ltd., organized walkathons in five major cities across India to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
The event, held in collaboration with non-profit organization HelpAge India, took place in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru, drawing the participation of over 850 senior citizens. The walkathons were held at various prominent locations: Girgaon Chowpatty in Mumbai, Deer Park in New Delhi, Chetla Central Park in Kolkata, Anna Nagar Tower Park in Chennai, and National College Ground in Bengaluru.
The initiative was aimed at educating the public about Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder and the most common cause of dementia, which continues to affect millions of individuals in India. Despite its widespread impact, awareness about the disease remains limited, often being misunderstood as a natural part of aging rather than a serious medical condition.
Madhurima Singh, Chairperson of Alkem’s CSR committee, emphasized the foundation’s dedication to raising awareness through initiatives like these. “At Alkem, we are deeply committed to initiatives that create a lasting impact, especially in areas where increased awareness and empathy can lead to real, tangible change,” Singh said. “We are happy that this is the fourth consecutive year of Alkem Foundation’s ‘Awarathon’ for Alzheimer’s disease. Each year, we have amplified our objectives and broadened our reach, ensuring that more individuals and communities are engaged in this vital cause. We remain steadfast in building a more informed and compassionate society.”
Alzheimer’s is often mistaken for a natural part of the aging process, but it is a complex neurological disorder requiring significant attention and care. Recent studies show that approximately 7.4% of adults over the age of 60 in India are living with dementia, which translates to around 8.8 million people. This growing figure underscores the importance of early detection and better management of the disease, which events like Alkem Foundation’s walkathons aim to promote.
