India witnessed 125% increase in medical seats since 2014: JP Nadda

New Delhi: The Bihar Jharkhand Medical Forum (BJMF) held a press conference on “Current Medical Challenges in India: A Focus on Bihar and Jharkhand,” highlighting the critical healthcare issues faced by the states and the country as a whole.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Jagat Prakash Nadda, Minister of Health, Government of India and President of the Bharatiya Janata Party who shared insights on the evolution of Indian healthcare and government initiatives aimed at improving access and quality of care.

Nadda emphasized the transformative impact of initiatives like Ayushman Bharat, which has significantly reduced out-of-pocket expenditures for healthcare. He announced the upcoming second phase of the program, which will provide health coverage of Rs 5 lakh per year for individuals over the age of 70, ensuring lifelong care. He also commended the BJMF for its commitment to scientific research and expressed the government’s openness to the findings of these studies. “There is an 125% increase in medical seats from 51000 in 2014 to 1,15,412. PM Modi has said that 75,000 seats will be added in next five years,” he said.

“Bihar is on the cusp of a healthcare revolution,” said Shri Nadda. “With Asia’s second-largest hospital being developed in Patna and a dramatic increase in medical college seats, we are laying a strong foundation for a healthier future.”

The conference highlighted several key initiatives aimed at transforming healthcare in Bihar and Jharkhand. Recommendations were made to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural areas, where disparities remain significant. Discussions focused on capacity-building measures and the effective utilization of AIIMS facilities in Darbhanga and Deoghar.

Dr. Anshuman Kumar, Cancer Surgeon and Member of Bihar Jharkhand Medical Forum, provided expert insights into the state of cancer treatment in India. He emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention, especially in underserved areas. The BJMF is making impactful contributions in improving healthcare access, and it is our collective duty to ensure healthcare reaches every corner of Bihar and Jharkhand,” he said.

Additionally, awareness campaigns were proposed to educate the public on complex diseases and facilitate connections between local patients and leading healthcare professionals. To further enhance the region’s healthcare infrastructure, various initiatives were outlined, along with plans for future health camps, workshops, and an International Medical Conference scheduled for 2025.

The conference attracted senior doctors from renowned institutions including AIIMS, Safdarjung, Apollo, Max, and Fortis, fostering a rich dialogue on the challenges of complex diseases such as cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and diabetes.
