New Delhi: Nephro Care India Ltd (NCIL) has inaugurated a new renal care clinic in Alipurduar, West Bengal. The facility is designed to meet the increasing demand for advanced diagnostics and pharmacy support for kidney patients in the region.
The Alipurduar clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and a fully functional pharmacy, catering to the diverse needs of kidney patients. NCIL plans to open 22 more renal care centers by March 2026, with nine of these slated for various districts across West Bengal. This expansion is part of a broader vision to establish 300 comprehensive renal care clinics nationwide over the next 10 to 15 years.
Dr. Pratim Sengupta, a senior nephrologist and the Managing Director of Nephro Care India, emphasized the urgent need for more dialysis centers in India. According to government estimates, nearly 220,000 patients develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the country annually, resulting in a demand for 34 million dialysis sessions each year. However, with only around 5,000 dialysis centers, including 1,353 under the PM National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP), the current infrastructure is inadequate to meet this growing demand.
“Studies indicate that India is adding close to 2,20,000 ESRD patients each year. On an average nearly 15 per cent of the country’s population suffers from high blood sugar levels and nearly 22 per cent from hypertension or high blood pressure. Both these conditions pose a high risk for developing renal diseases. Moreover, one of the biggest challenges that India faces is that of OTC (over the counter) medicines which also leads to an exponential rise in burden of kidney disease. Inadequate infrastructure and limited access to specialized renal care are some of the major challenges contributing to the high burden of end-stage kidney disease in India,” Dr Sengupta said.
He added, “At Nephro Care we aim to add quality life to the patients by providing holistic care. Rural areas, in particular, face a bigger challenge as most of the dialysis centres are in the urban areas thereby requiring patients from these centres to travel fairly long distance to access care. We are committed to having one centre across each of the districts of West Bengal in the next two-to-three years.”
Nephro Care India recently expanded its services by opening the Vivacity Multispecialty Hospital in Madhyamgram, Kolkata. This 100-bed facility, built at an investment of approximately Rs 36.51 crore, offers a range of treatment services across various medical disciplines, including cardiology, medical oncology, gastroenterology, and gynaecology. The hospital also features an advanced renal transplant unit and a 30-bed dialysis center, enhancing its capacity to provide specialized renal care in East India.
