New Delhi: Boston Scientific announced the successful completion of the 100th procedure using its Rezūm™ Water Vapor Therapy for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Since its introduction in India in January 2024, this minimally invasive therapy has been employed to treat patients in multiple states, including Delhi NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana.
BPH is a common condition characterized by an enlarged prostate that obstructs urine flow, causing symptoms such as difficulty urinating, incomplete bladder emptying, and frequent or urgent urination, especially at night. This condition affects approximately 50% of men by age 60 and 90% by age 85. The 100 patients in India treated with the Rezūm System range in age from 46 to 91.
The Rezūm procedure uses a medical device designed for transurethral water vapor ablation of the prostate, eliminating the need for incisions, implants, or ongoing medication. The device delivers water vapor into the prostate through the urethra. The energy from the water vapor targets excess prostate tissue cells, which the body’s healing response subsequently removes, alleviating pressure on the urethra and reducing BPH symptoms.
This procedure can be performed with local anesthesia and as an in-office treatment, minimizing the burden on both doctor and patient. Most patients experience symptom improvement within two weeks, with maximum results seen in three months and a return to normal activities within a few days post-treatment. However, patient responses may vary.
“Over the years, Boston Scientific has brought numerous innovative medical technologies to patients in India and provided a variety of treatments for urologic conditions including BPH, stress urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction,” said Madan R. Krishnan, Vice President and Managing Director, India Subcontinent, Boston Scientific. “In line with our mission to transform the lives of patients around the world through innovative medical solutions, we are the first med-tech company to bring water vapor therapy to India as a treatment option for patients with BPH. We will continue to offer urologists clinically effective and safe treatment options to improve the quality of life of their patients.”
The Rezūm System received approval from the Drug Controller General of India in October 2023.
