New Delhi: Skye Air Mobility has partnered with CARiTAS Hospital & Institute of Health Sciences in Kottayam, Kerala, to launch a drone-based medical delivery system. This initiative, set to transform healthcare logistics in South Kerala, will employ unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to transport essential medical supplies and diagnostic samples, significantly enhancing efficiency and accessibility.
The Caritas Drone Medical Supply Delivery Unit, the first of its kind in South Kerala, will utilize drones capable of carrying payloads of up to 3 kilograms over distances ranging from 10 to 15 kilometers. This technology will connect CARiTAS Hospital with its satellite healthcare facilities (CFH, CKMM, CHPD), including Caritas Family Hospital and CARiTAS KMM, as well as remote areas within the region.
This new system is expected to cut delivery times dramatically, reducing them from hours to just 5-7 minutes. The drone deliveries will not only expedite the supply of critical medical materials but also contribute to reduced carbon emissions by minimizing reliance on road transportation.
The launch event, attended by local dignitaries and healthcare professionals, showcased the first successful drone flight, which transported vital medicines from CARiTAS Hospital to nearby facilities, located 10-15 kilometres away.
Dr. Binu Kunnath, Director of CARiTAS Hospital, expressed, “We’re excited to work with Skye Air Mobility on this project. Drones are a game-changer for healthcare in Kottayam, helping us reach patients in remote areas much faster and more reliably. Whether it’s delivering medicine, transporting lab samples, or providing medical equipment, these drones will improve care in our community.”
MLA Mons Joseph praised the initiative, highlighting its alignment with Kerala’s commitment to leveraging technology for public benefit. “Drones can deliver critical medication to remote areas in minutes, not hours, which can be life-saving. This initiative fits well with our government’s goal of enhancing public services with technology,” he said.
Fr. Joice Nandikunnel, Joint Director, highlighted the evolving trends in the healthcare industry and the role of drones in enhancing services, particularly in remote areas. Fr. Jismon was also present during the function, underscoring the support and enthusiasm within the community for this innovative project.
Dr. Ajith Venugopalan, Chief Operating Officer at CARiTAS Hospital, emphasized the positive impact the drone system will have on patient care and community health.
Ankit Kumar, CEO and Founder of Skye Air Mobility commented, “By establishing an aerial supply chain, we are not only reducing delivery times but also minimizing costs and environmental impact. This initiative serves as a model for future healthcare logistics solutions across India.”
The drone delivery program will undergo trial runs over the coming weeks, with plans for a full-scale rollout across Kottayam district. Both CARiTAS Hospital and Skye Air Mobility are committed to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the system in compliance with relevant regulations.
