Union Agri Minister reviews surge in pulse cultivation during Kharif sowing season

Minister Chouhan highlights an increase in Tur/Arhar cultivation, stresses the national priority of self-sufficiency in pulse production

New Delhi: Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, expressed satisfaction over the notable increase in the cultivation area for pulses during the ongoing Kharif sowing season. Addressing the progress of Kharif crops at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, Minister Chouhan highlighted that the area under pulses, particularly Tur/Arhar, has surged by more than fifty per cent compared to previous seasons.
Emphasizing the strategic importance of achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production, Minister Chouhan underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring 100 per cent procurement of Urad, Arhar, and Masur across all states. He urged concerted efforts to raise awareness among farmers to encourage more extensive participation in pulse cultivation.
During the review meeting, Minister Chouhan was briefed on the favorable onset of monsoon, the current groundwater situation and the availability of seeds and fertilisers. He stressed the crucial need for timely availability of fertilizers to support both Kharif and Rabi crop cycles. The Department of Fertilizers was directed to ensure an adequate supply of DAP fertilizers in accordance with the states’ requirements.
Accompanying Minister Chouhan were Sanjeev Chopra from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, senior officials from the Ministry, representatives from the Indian Meteorological Department, Central Water Commission, and officials from the Department of Fertilizers.
