UP, Maharashtra, WB & Bihar among top 4 states with maximum cancer cases in 2022

New Delhi: There is an increasing trend of cancer incidences in India, with few reports suggesting that these could reach 15 lakh in 2023 from over 14 lakh cases reported during 2022.

The estimated incidence of cancer cases in 2022 India were 14,61,427 as compared to 14,26,447 in 2021. In 2020, cases were at 13,92,179. Again, the estimated mortality from cancer cases during 2022 were 8,08,558 deaths compared to 7,89,202 deaths in 2021. In 2020, deaths were at 7,70,230.

The information based on data released by the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Cancer Registry Programme (ICMR-NCRP) was shared by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar in the Parliament recently.

The Minister also shared the estimated number of incidences and estimated number of mortalities of cancer cases across various states and UTs during 2020 to 2022 for last three years.

Uttar Pradesh topped the list with estimated 210958 incidences of cancer cases during 2022. It was followed by Maharashtra at 121717, West Bengal at 113581 and Bihar at 109274.

Similarly, the estimated mortality from cancer cases had similar trends as Uttar Pradesh topped the list with estimated 116818 deaths during 2022. It was followed by Maharashtra at 66879, West Bengal at 62652 and Bihar at 60629.
