90% breast cancer cases detected only at stage 4: Dr Suresh Advani

The renowned doctor recalls his memory of 1982 in Malegaon when he conducted his first bone marrow transplant

New Delhi: During the inauguration of the new Chemotherapy Ward at TGH-Onco Life Cancer Center, Talegaon, Pune, Dr Suresh Advani, the first eminent Medical Oncologist in India awarded with PADMASHRI and PADMABHUSHAN, having a vast experience spanning over 40 years in medical oncology/haematology recalled the year 1982 when he had done my first bone marrow transplant in the patient from Talegaon.
Dr Suresh Advani stated: “Today I am very happy to serve the patients at TGH Onco-Life Cancer Centre and would like to congratulate them for having the best infrastructure and facilities with advanced technology. Over the 5 decades, I have seen that today’s patients’ attitude has drastically changed as they come forward for treatment with strong willpower to overcome the cancer.”
“Early diagnosis and awareness among the patients give us a stronger hand in this fight against cancer. Also, patients want treatment facilities in their neighborhoods and so many new hospitals are coming up with daycare centers to offer cancer treatment. Previously we used to see 90% of the patients getting detected for breast cancer at stage 4. Today in city patients we see only 10% of such cases. That means they are coming early, so people have changed and today breast cancer has become a curable disease,” Dr Advani added.
He has received India’s highest civilian accolades, the Padma Bhushan Award in 2012 and the Padma Shri Award in 2002, from the Indian government. He has also received the Dhanvantari Award in 2002, the Medical Council of India’s Dr. B. C. Roy National Award in 2005, the Rashtriya Krantiveer Award in Ujjain in 2014, and Harvard Medical International’s Lifetime Achievement in Oncology in 2005.
Known as a renowned oncologist, he is credited with introducing stem cell transplantation not only in Mumbai but also across India. Patients will be safe in the hands of Dr. Advani and can improve their quality of life with his prompt diagnosis, treatment, and suggestions.
