New Delhi: Alcon has announced the launch of the UNITY® Vitreoretinal Cataract System (VCS) and UNITY® Cataract System (CS) in India. The platform offers two configurations: a combined console (VCS), now available, and a standalone cataract system (CS), expected to be available in the coming months.
The systems are designed to support vitreoretinal and cataract surgery, featuring UNITY 4D Phaco, HYPERVIT® 30K, and the UNITY Intelligent Fluidics system. These technologies enable surgeons to operate at physiologic conditions while maintaining efficiency.
According to Alcon, more than a dozen new features have been incorporated into the UNITY VCS/CS platform, with the aim of improving stability and workflow in surgery centers. “With UNITY VCS/CS, we are introducing next-generation equipment solutions to meet the growing demand for advanced eye care in India,” said Amar Vyas, Country Head of Alcon India.
India performs over 8 million cataract surgeries annually, one of the highest volumes globally. However, with just one ophthalmologist for every 100,000 people, the surgical workload remains high.
The UNITY VCS/CS introduces Intelligent Fluidics, a pressure and flow control technology with real-time sensing, designed to maintain surgical stability. It also brings several advancements for vitreoretinal surgery, including the UNITY 27 Gauge Portfolio, which uses proprietary consumables with dynamic stiffener technology to provide stiffness comparable to larger instruments in a smaller gauge. The UNITY TetraSpot, a multi-spot illuminated laser probe, reduces laser application time by enabling surgeons to deliver multiple simultaneous spots during a procedure. UNITY Illumination is designed to reduce blue light exposure while offering customizable light profiles and reliable tissue visualization.
For cataract procedures, the UNITY VCS/CS includes enhancements such as UNITY Intelligent Sentry, which maintains anterior chamber stability while reducing post-occlusion surge volumes. The UNITY Thermal Sentry features a thermal sensor to estimate incision temperature in real time and regulate ultrasound power. The UNITY 4D Phaco technology is designed to remove the nucleus faster and with less energy compared to existing systems.
Dr. Hisaharu Suzuki from Japan, who performs about 1,500 cataract surgeries annually, noted that UNITY VCS/CS streamlined surgical procedures and improved workflow efficiency.
The UNITY VCS/CS has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in India. It is the first product from Alcon’s UNITY portfolio, which will also include remote and predictive service options to minimize downtime.
