New Delhi: The Apollo Trauma Masterclass 2024, organized by Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, convened leading experts in trauma care to address critical issues and share innovative approaches to enhance trauma management and emergency response.
The event underscored the alarming reality of trauma in India, where a trauma-related death occurs every 1.9 minutes, primarily due to road accidents. Despite accounting for only 1% of the world’s motorized vehicles, India is responsible for 11% of global automobile accidents, with approximately 450,000 road incidents annually, resulting in around 150,000 fatalities. Given this backdrop, timely trauma care is essential.
Neeraj Lal, COO of Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, emphasized the life-saving potential of prompt medical treatment, stating, “Timely treatment can be the difference between life and death for trauma victims. It is important that medical professionals across the board are equipped to act at short notice to save lives. The Apollo Trauma Masterclass aimed to share the latest insights and approaches into trauma care that can save lives with the participants.”
A significant focus of the masterclass was the concept of the “golden hour,” referring to the critical first 60 minutes following a traumatic injury. Experts stressed that immediate medical intervention within this timeframe can greatly enhance survival rates for trauma patients.
Dr. Sanjay Shah, Senior Consultant Trauma Surgeon and Head of the Emergency Department at Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, noted, “The management of severely injured patients remains a challenge, especially in a high-volume trauma country like ours. At Apollo, we follow gold-standard protocols for trauma care that include airway protection, rapid hemorrhage control, critical cavity decompression, early stabilization of fractures, and intensive monitoring of vital organs. The Apollo Trauma Masterclass is designed to reinforce these practices and ensure consistency in delivering world-class trauma care.”
Dr. Piyasha Nath Sen, Joint Medical Director at Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, elaborated on the hospital’s commitment to improving trauma care outcomes. “At Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, we follow comprehensive connected care services for trauma care. We have the best trauma surgeons in our facility who can perform cutting-edge procedures,” she said.
The masterclass gave a thorough explanation of the various tiers of trauma centers. Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, a Level 1 trauma center, provides the most extensive care for complex injuries, with round-the-clock availability of emergency physicians, nurses, and surgeons, as well as all major subspecialty services. Level II trauma centers offer conclusive care for patients with severe trauma.
