Govt launches Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana to support 2G bio-ethanol projects

New scheme to fund ten bio-ethanol plants, including six commercial and four demonstration projects across India

New Delhi: The government has announced the “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN (Jaiv Indhan- Vatavaran Anukool Fasal Awashesh Nivaran) Yojana,” to offer financial assistance for the development of Second Generation (2G) bioethanol projects.
This initiative aims to promote the establishment of 2G bioethanol plants utilizing cellulosic and lignocellulosic biomass, as well as petrochemical and other feedstocks.
The initiative has approved funding for a total of ten bio-ethanol plants, comprising six commercial and four demonstration projects. The commercial plants will be set up in Haryana, Odisha, Punjab, Assam, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. 
Notably, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. will set up a commercial plant in Panipat, Haryana, while Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. will establish a plant in Bargarh, Odisha. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. is set to build a plant in Bathinda, Punjab, and Numaligarh Refineries Limited will operate a plant in Numaligarh, Assam. Additional plants are planned by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd in Davangere, Karnataka, and RCPL in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh.
Sharing the details, Suresh Gopi, Minister of State in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas mentioned in the Rajya Sabha, “The demonstration projects will be established in Panipat, Haryana, Sagauli, Bihar, Sangli, Maharashtra, and Sameerwadi, Karnataka. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. will set up a plant in Sagauli, Bihar, Lignopura Agrotech Pvt Ltd in Sangli, Maharashtra, and Godavari Biorefineries Ltd in Sameerwadi, Karnataka. The demonstration plant in Panipat, Haryana, set up by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., was dedicated to the nation on 10th August 2022. The commercial bio-ethanol plants in Bathinda, Bargarh, and Numaligarh are currently in advanced stages of construction.”
“In addition to these projects, IOCL has inaugurated a Third-Generation bio-ethanol plant in Panipat, Haryana, enhancing the country’s biofuel infrastructure. This comprehensive effort reflects the government’s commitment to advancing bio-ethanol production and reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” stated the Minister.
