New Delhi: Dr Divya Jain, a distinguished PhD scholar from the GD Goenka University, has been appointed to the Indian Olympic Association’s medical team for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
Dr Jain, who heads the Psychological Services for the Fortis National Mental Health Program, will collaborate with renowned psychiatrist Dr. Samir Parikh to support the mental well-being of Indian athletes participating in the games.
Dr Jain, elaborating on her role, said, “I travelled to SAI centres and NIS Patiala since it’s important that athletes know us by name and face so they aren’t sitting down with someone they have never met before in Paris. There is going to be a medical room where we will be available, and if the need arises, we will also travel to the venues.”
Nipun Goenka, Managing Director of the GD Goenka Group, expressed, “We are immensely proud of Divya Jain’s accomplishments and her dedication to promoting mental health support in the field of sports. Her expertise and appointment are a testament to GD Goenka University’s endeavours to emphasize the mental well-being of students and communities. We are confident that her contributions will make a significant impact in the Paris 2024 Olympics.”
Her appointment represents a significant step towards offering comprehensive support to athletes, with a particular focus on enhancing performance and mental well-being. This decision aligns with the growing global awareness of mental health, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic affected the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
During the pandemic, Dr. Jain played a crucial role in supporting athletes through virtual sessions as they faced unprecedented challenges. Her efforts highlighted the critical need for mental health support in sports, which is now being addressed through her role with the Indian Olympic Association.
