New Delhi: Sahyadri Hospitals is leading the way in cancer treatment with the launch of Asia’s first TomoTherapy Radixact X9 system, now featuring the advanced VitalHold technology.
This new system represents a major advance in radiation therapy, providing exceptional precision and improved outcomes for patients, especially tthose requiring meticulous motion management.
The Radixact X9, known for its precision and adaptability, is now enhanced by the VitalHold technology, which is crucial for treating cancers in motion-sensitive areas, such as those in the lung and abdomen. The VitalHold system uses the Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique to stabilize tumors, allowing for precise radiation targeting while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. This feature is particularly valuable for treating thoracic cancers like lung and breast cancer, where exact targeting is vital.
Dr. Sanjay Hunugundmath, Lead Radiation Oncologist at Sahyadri Hospitals, highlighted, “The system offers real-time adaptation based on imaging, ensuring the radiation dose is accurately delivered to the target while sparing healthy tissues. This is particularly beneficial for tumors that move with respiration, such as those in the lung and abdominal regions. This system sets a new standard for precision and patient care for cancer patients in Pune. This technology uses millions of laser points on the patient’s body to ensure precise positioning and continuous monitoring, improving treatment accuracy and efficiency.”
The Radixact X9 system stands out with its Auto Beam Hold feature, which automatically halts radiation delivery if the patient shifts out of the acceptable range during treatment. This safety feature, combined with the system’s high-definition Clarity Imaging Technology, allows for more accurate tumor identification and localization. The use of helical kVCT imaging further supports rapid and precise image acquisition, reducing potential for patient movement and image artifacts.
Dr. Shona Nag, Director of the Oncology Department at Sahyadri Hospitals, emphasized, “Currently, only three centers worldwide, including Sahyadri Hospitals, offer the Radixact X9 system with VitalHold. This exclusive technology positions Sahyadri Hospitals at the forefront of cancer treatment, providing patients with access to cutting-edge therapies that improve outcomes and quality of life. The Radixact X9 without VitalHold is covered under standard insurance packages, classified as image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Efforts are underway to secure specific coverage for VitalHold, ensuring that advanced cancer care is accessible and affordable.”
The new technology not only enhances treatment accuracy and effectiveness but also improves patient comfort, reducing the need for physical markers. The breath-hold technique is user-friendly, using visual cues to guide patients through the process, and is suitable for a broad range of cancers, including lung, breast, abdominal, prostate, pediatric tumors, and total body irradiation.
“Our team at Sahyadri Hospitals has embraced this advanced technology with extensive training. We are committed to providing the highest standards of care by leveraging the full capabilities of the Radixact X9 system with VitalHold, ensuring optimal outcomes for our patients. The addition of this unique technology will significantly boost our center of excellence in oncology care. We are working diligently to include this advanced treatment in insurance packages, making it accessible and affordable for our patients,” stated Mr. Abrarali Dalal, Director and CEO of Sahyadri Hospitals.
