New Delhi: The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) received the prestigious “Top 10 Best NGOs of the Year – 2024” award at the Global CSR & ESG Awards held at the Hyatt Regency in Gurgaon. Mahaveer C Jain from LVPEI’s Public Relations and Donor Affairs team accepted the award on behalf of the institute, acknowledging the collective efforts and support that have propelled LVPEI’s mission forward.
Dr. Prashant Garg, Executive Chairman of LVPEI, expressed, “The award is a testament to the tireless dedication of the entire team and the unwavering support of our donors and partners. Awards such as this propel us to continue our efforts #SoThatAllMaySee.”
The Global CSR & ESG Awards recognize organizations that excel in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, highlighting their impactful collaborations with NGOs and social enterprises.
LVPEI was specifically acknowledged for its transformative “Eye Health Pyramid” model, which has directly benefited 150 million people in India. Annually, LVPEI provides over 2 million eye care services, including 150,000 surgeries, with nearly half of these services offered free of cost regardless of complexity.
As one of the world’s largest corneal transplantation centers, LVPEI has successfully performed over 50,000 transplants to date. The institute has also played a pivotal role in training over 62,000 eye care professionals globally and publishing more than 4,500 research papers in esteemed medical journals.
The innovative “Eye Health Pyramid” integrates primary, secondary, and tertiary eye care services, ensuring accessible and affordable eye health solutions in remote rural areas. Vision Guardians conduct basic screenings for up to 5,000 individuals, referring those in need to Vision Centres, which serve around 50,000 people. These centers, in turn, connect to secondary and tertiary care facilities equipped to handle complex cases.
A network of 10 vision centers connects to a secondary center, collectively serving up to half a million individuals. Currently, LVPEI operates 26 secondary centers that provide access to eye doctors, basic surgical care, and in some cases, advanced procedures like corneal transplants. Additionally, the four tertiary care centers located in Bhubaneswar, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Kadapa, along with the advanced tertiary center headquartered in Hyderabad, bolster the pyramid with specialized services, including rehabilitation for those who are irreversibly blind.
LVPEI’s model has garnered international acclaim and support from organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), Operation Eyesight Universal, Seva Foundation, and Mission for Vision, who promote its adoption globally to combat avoidable vision loss.
The Government of India plans to replicate the LVPEI model by establishing 20,000 vision centers nationwide, further expanding access to quality eye care.
