The Cover Story in the current edition focuses on India’s strong biotech R&D segment and its strong network of research institutions. At the same time there has been a lack of ability in terms of biotech industry-oriented product outcomes. In that context and given the learnings from the pandemic, the current edition focuses on the growing importance of R&D, especially from the academia angle.

Dr Sanjeev Khosla, Director, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s Chandigarh based Institute of Microbial Technology (CSIR-IMTECH) shares his exclusive views on India’s innovation ecosystem.  An interaction with Dr Taslimarif Saiyed, CEO and Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) who provides his perspective on what must drive R&D efforts.
Recently the Atal Incubation Centre – Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad completed five years of its operations. We discussed its achievements so far and the broader startup ecosystem in India with Dr N. Madhusudhana Rao, Chief Executive Officer of AIC-CCMB.
The startup special features Gurugram based healthtech startup, Lissun. The company is working actively to find solutions for decluttering the chaotic mindspace. Expert insights by Abhishek Mohan, Founder & CEO, HempStreet are about the medical cannabis and their potential in curing many patient conditions. At the global level, there are many new fresh innovations. Imagine bone marrows being created in a petridish to improve anti-cancer treatments.
Meanwhile, the Department of Biotechnology has decided to centralize the autonomy of its 14 institutes. The first impression is that there will be collective decision making at the central level. So, are the powers of directors being taken away and vested in the hands of a committee? Clarity would come once the fresh details emerge.
